About Kiel

Among Baltic cruise ports like Copenhagen, Gdańsk, Helsinki, Klaipėda and others, Kiel stands out as Germany's largest city on the Baltic Sea. With a population of around 250,000, this northern German capital offers visitors a blend of maritime heritage and green spaces, all conveniently positioned near the cruise terminal.

The port itself sits at the mouth of the Schwentine River on the Kieler Förde inlet, and is home to the Kiel Canal terminus—the world's busiest artificial waterway connecting the Baltic to the North Sea. This strategic location has shaped Kiel's identity as a major maritime hub for centuries.

Things to see and do

Most attractions lie within easy reach of the port. The Boat harbour is just 0.2 km away, offering views of working vessels and waterfront activity. For green spaces, Hiroshimapark (0.5 km) and the Old Botanical Garden (0.9 km) provide peaceful retreats, whilst Schrevenpark (1.2 km) offers more expansive parkland. The Hörn waterfront area (1.4 km) and Germaniahafen (1.0 km) are popular spots for walks and photography. Further afield, Leuchtturm Kiel-Holtenau lighthouse (5.2 km) rewards visitors with Baltic views.

Kiel is the capital and most populous city in the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein. With a population of around 250,000, it is Germany's largest city on the Baltic Sea. It is located on the Kieler Förde inlet of the Bay of Kiel and lies in the southeast of the Jutland Peninsula, at the mouth of the Schwentine River, approximately 90 kilometres (56 mi) northeast of Hamburg. The world's busiest artificial waterway, the Kiel Canal, has a terminus in Kiel's Holtenau district. This canal connects the Baltic to the North Sea, with its other end in Brunsbüttel. Most of Kiel is part of Holstein. The boroughs north of the Schwentine also belong to Wagria, while those north of the Kiel Canal are historically part of Southern Schleswig.
