About Helsinki
Culture and history enthusiasts will find Helsinki rewarding, with the city's most significant landmarks concentrated close to the waterfront. The capital is home to around 694,000 people in the municipality, making it the country's most important centre for politics, education, finance, culture and research.
Within a short walk of the port, you can visit the Helsinki Cathedral and Temppeliaukio Church, both less than 1 km away. Senate Square and Esplanadi city park are equally accessible, offering architecture and green space. A little further afield, Suomenlinna fortress lies 4 km from the port, while the Sibelius Monument and Uspenski Cathedral are also within reach for those wanting to explore beyond the immediate waterfront.
What to see
Helsinki Market Square sits just 1 km from the port and gives a flavour of local life and Finnish produce. Those interested in military heritage will appreciate Suomenlinna, a fortress accessible from the city centre, which has drawn strong visitor interest.
Getting around
Helsinki is part of the Baltic cruise region, with nearby ports including Copenhagen, Gdańsk, Kiel and Klaipėda. The city's bilingual character (Finnish and Swedish) reflects its position as a significant Nordic centre.
Helsinki, until about 1930 known in English by its Swedish name of Helsingfors, is the capital and most populous city in Finland. It is on the shore of the Gulf of Finland and is the seat of southern Finland's Uusimaa region. About 694,000 people live in the municipality, with 1.3 million in the capital region and 1.6 million in the metropolitan area. As the most populous urban area in Finland, it is the country's most significant centre for politics, education, finance, culture, and research. Helsinki is 80 kilometres (50 mi) north of Tallinn, Estonia, 400 kilometres (250 mi) east of Stockholm, Sweden, and 300 kilometres (190 mi) west of Saint Petersburg, Russia. Helsinki is a bilingual municipality with Finnish and Swedish as its official languages.
