When the season runs

Norwegian Fjords cruises operate during the months of May, June, July, August and September. This window captures the region's warmest weather and longest daylight hours, making it the prime time for exploring Norway's dramatic coastal landscape.

The classic ports and what to do in each

Most Norwegian Fjords itineraries call at a mix of major cities and smaller fjord ports. Oslo often serves as a starting point, where you can visit the Oslo Opera House and The Vigeland Park. Bergen is a frequent stop, home to Bergenhus Fortress and Bryggen, the historic waterfront district.

Ålesund offers the Atlantic Sea-Park and Byrampen Viewpoint. Molde features Molde Panorama and Romsdal Museum, giving insight into local culture and landscape. Further south, Stavanger has Sverd i fjell and Gamle Stavanger, whilst Kristiansand offers Christiansholm Fortress and Kaptein Sabeltanns Verden.

Deeper into the fjords, Geiranger is known for Flydalsjuvet and Fossevandring Geiranger. Åndalsnes provides access to Rampestreken and Trollstigen for those wanting dramatic mountain scenery. Flåm is home to the famous Flåmsbana railway and Flåm Railway Museum, whilst Eidfjord features Vøringsfossen waterfall and Norsk Natursenter Hardanger. Olden offers Olden Adventure and Laukifossen, and Haugesund has the King Harald I Fairhair statue and Marilyn Monroe Statue.

Daylight, weather and what to pack

Daylight hours vary significantly across the season. Around the June solstice, daylight is at its longest, and in the far north you may experience the midnight sun during June and July. As summer progresses through July, August and into September, daylight gradually shortens, though there remains plenty of light for exploring.

Weather in the Norwegian Fjords can be changeable. Bring waterproof clothing and layers, as conditions vary between sheltered fjord waters and more exposed coastal areas. Comfortable walking shoes are essential for shore excursions, and sun protection is advisable during the brighter months.

Sailing from the UK

Norwegian Fjords cruises depart from Southampton and other UK ports, with sailings arranged throughout the May to September season. Itineraries vary in length and which ports they include, so compare what each cruise offers to find the combination of destinations that suits you.

Fjords vs Northern Lights sailings

The May to September season focuses on the fjords themselves, with extended daylight allowing you to see the landscape in detail and enjoy outdoor activities. This differs from winter sailings, which target the Northern Lights in the Arctic. If your priority is experiencing Norway's fjords, glaciers, waterfalls and mountain scenery in daylight, the summer season is the right choice.
