Regional departures: fewer sailings, shorter drives

Most UK cruises depart from Southampton, but four smaller regional ports offer an alternative. Edinburgh, Belfast, Bristol and Harwich serve different parts of the country and can mean a shorter journey to the ship and a quieter departure experience.

These ports operate fewer sailings than Southampton, so availability is more limited. However, if you live in Scotland, Northern Ireland, the South West or East Anglia, a regional departure can save you travel time and hassle.

Ambassador Cruise Line and Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines are the main operators from Edinburgh, Belfast and Bristol. Harwich also hosts Saga Cruises. All three lines focus on UK and European itineraries rather than fly-cruise holidays.

Edinburgh (Rosyth and Leith)

Rosyth (Fife) and Leith serve Edinburgh, with sailings operated by Ambassador Cruise Line and Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines. Both terminals handle Scottish departures.

From Edinburgh, you can reach the Norwegian Fjords during the summer months (May to September). Typical itineraries visit ports such as Bergen, Oslo and Ålesund, with scenic cruising through the fjords themselves. These voyages are usually seven to ten days.

British Isles cruises are also available from Edinburgh, offering routes around Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Irish coast. These tend to be shorter, four- to seven-day sailings.

For travel details and how to reach the terminals, check the port websites.

Belfast

Belfast Harbour has a dedicated cruise terminal used by Ambassador Cruise Line and Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines for Northern Ireland departures.

Sailings from Belfast focus on the British Isles and coastal routes. You can cruise around Ireland, Scotland and Wales, or venture to ports in England and further afield. Most sailings run from May to September, though some operate in spring and autumn.

Itineraries often include stops at Dublin, Cork and other Irish ports, as well as UK destinations. Voyage lengths typically range from four to seven days.

For specific travel information, visit the port website.

Bristol (Avonmouth)

Bristol's cruise terminal is located at Royal Portbury and Avonmouth. Ambassador Cruise Line and Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines operate occasional departures from Bristol.

Sailings are less frequent than from larger ports, so you should check availability well in advance. When available, cruises typically head to the British Isles or coastal European routes.

Bristol's location in the South West makes it convenient for passengers in Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and surrounding areas who want to avoid travelling to Southampton.

For travel arrangements and current sailings, consult the port website.

Harwich

Harwich International Port is one of several UK ports offering sailings to Norway and the Baltic. Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, Ambassador Cruise Line and Saga Cruises all operate from Harwich.

The Norwegian Fjords are a popular summer destination from Harwich, with voyages running from May to September. Itineraries visit ports including Molde and other scenic locations along Norway's coast.

Baltic cruises, typically operating in the summer months, take you to ports in Scandinavia and around the Baltic Sea. These voyages are usually longer, often ten to fourteen days.

British Isles and North Sea cruises also depart from Harwich, offering shorter four- to seven-day options.

Harwich serves passengers in East Anglia and the East Midlands, offering a more convenient departure point than Southampton for those regions.

How to find them

Availability varies seasonally, with most cruises operating from May to September for fjord and Baltic destinations, and spring to autumn for British Isles and coastal routes.
