About Cartagena

History enthusiasts will find Cartagena a rewarding port of call. This Colombian city on the Caribbean coast has shaped world exploration and trade for centuries, serving as a key link in maritime routes between Spain and the West Indies. Its strategic position and defensive fortifications made it crucial to Spain's colonial empire, and that heritage is evident throughout the city today.

The historic centre lies just 2.7 km from the port, with several major attractions within easy reach. San Felipe de Barajas Fort stands 1.5 km away and showcases the city's military past, whilst the Centro Histórico de Cartagena itself is a living museum of colonial architecture. Plaza de Bolívar and Plaza de los Coches offer glimpses of daily life in the old city, and the Museum of Cartagena de Indias provides deeper insight into the region's complex history.

What to see near the port

Beyond the historic core, Centenario Park offers green space 2.4 km away, whilst the Bahía De Cartagena and Malecón Bahía de las Ánimas provide waterfront views. Cartagena works well as part of a broader Caribbean itinerary; nearby ports include Belize City, Colón and Puerto Limón.

Cartagena, known since the imperial era as Cartagena de Indias, is a city and one of the major ports on the northern coast of Colombia in the Caribbean Coast Region, along the Caribbean Sea. Cartagena's past role as a link in the route to the West Indies provides it with important historical value for world exploration and preservation of heritage from the great commercial maritime routes. As a former Spanish colony, it was a key port for the export of Bolivian silver to Spain and for the import of enslaved Africans under the asiento system. It was defensible against pirate attacks in the Caribbean. The city's strategic location between the Magdalena and Sinú rivers also gave it easy access to the interior of New Granada and made it a main port for trade between Spain and its overseas empire, establishing its importance by the early 1540s.
